Pre-existing Programs

Here are some examples of move-out waste reduction programs that are in place at colleges and universities around the country:

At Santa Clara University, students are provided with locations around their residence halls where they can drop off their different types of move out waste. For example, all donatable items are brought down to the lobby of the residence hall.

The University of North Carolina has implemented a waste reduction program in which students moving out their dorms give their furniture, office supplies, and other appliances to donation stations. The donation stations then give these items to charitable organizations.

Knox college has programs in place to reduce landfill waste using volunteers to sift through move out waste and retrieve reusable and recyclable items.

Give+Go is a yearly program at Skidmore college designed to gather used goods students leave behind at the end of the year when they move out and bring them to local or regional nonprofits, where they can be either reused or resold. The students simply place their items in the collection bins that are put out at the end of the year around campus.

Trash2Treasure is an annual yard sale in Swarthmore college. The sale is dedicated for students to donate what they do not want before moving out, and all the proceeds from the sale will be donated to charity.

The Trash-2-Treasure program at UNH is a donate and resale based program in which students donate their unwanted belongings at various drop off locations around campus. Then the items are stored over the summer, and resold during a massive three-day yard sale at the beginning of every school year. The money and leftover items are all donated to charity.
