Move-Out Waste Reduction

Research Question:

What strategies can be used to reduce the amount of waste accumulated by students moving out of the dorms each year?

Background:

Students all over the country move out of residence halls at the end of every school year. During move-out months there is a massive increase in the amount of waste accumulated at universities, a lot of which is household items such as furniture and electronics that can usually be reused. Most students do not have places to store these items over the summer when they travel home. As a result, most of these items end up in dumpsters and eventually landfills.

Fortunately, a few simple strategies can be established on campus to drastically reduce the amount of waste left behind during move-out.

A2Share:

A2Share is a community-based resource sharing organization with the mission of expanding Ann Arbor’s sharing economy. A2Share is targeting move-out waste from University of Michigan students as  a potential market for increasing sharing and reuse opportunities.
