Recommendation 1: Provide Procedural Knowledge and Strategies to Students
To promote desired behavior change on campus, it is important to provide students with procedural knowledge about ways they can cut back on move-out waste.
Recommendation 2: Apply to Social Norms
Another effective way of reducing move out waste is to utilize and illustrate social norms, which has been proven to be successful in getting people to participate in environmentally sustainable behavior.
Recommendation 3: LInk to shared values
Use social norms and inform people of the behaviors and attitudes of their peers to instigate change in reducing harmful behavior, or in this case environmentally destructive behavior.
Recommendation 4: Pilot Different Programs in Different Dorms
In order to create programs and policies that are most successful at reducing move-out waste, it is important to test possible strategies at a smaller scale before implementing them across the university.
Recommendation 5: Written Commitments from Students in Dorms (public commitments)
According to Katzev, written commitment usually yields a higher complying rate from the subjects. If we require people to write down their commitment, along with some degree of public commitment, we can greatly promote environmental friendly behavior.
